Organized Retail Theft Ring Busted in Peterborough

Three individuals are facing charges in connection with an alleged organized retail theft operation after Peterborough Police recovered $11,500 worth of stolen goods from a vehicle outside the Home Depot on Lansdowne Street.

The arrests occurred on the afternoon of November 27, following reports of suspicious activity at the store. Loss prevention staff observed two women and a man concealing merchandise in their clothing before leaving the premises.

Swift Police Action

Officers quickly responded, intercepting a suspect vehicle as it attempted to flee the parking lot. One woman briefly attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended.

A search of the vehicle revealed stolen goods from multiple retailers, a loss prevention scrambler device, and specialized bags designed to thwart theft detection systems.

Suspects and Charges

The suspects, who have no ties to Peterborough, include:

  • A 27-year-old woman from Etobicoke
  • A 34-year-old man from Etobicoke
  • A 36-year-old woman from the Greater Toronto Area

They face charges of:

  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

Authorities allege the trio is part of an organized crime ring targeting retailers across Ontario.

Ongoing Investigation

The suspects were held in custody and appeared in court on November 27. They were remanded into custody and are scheduled for another court appearance on December 3.

This case marks the third significant bust in the area this month. On November 12, two men from Brampton were arrested for similar offenses, suggesting a rise in organized retail crime targeting the region.

Acknowledgments

Peterborough Police credited Home Depot’s loss prevention officer for promptly alerting authorities, enabling the swift and successful response.

Organized retail theft remains a growing concern for retailers and communities. Police encourage businesses and the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to help combat these crimes.
