INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The holiday season is a critical time for both shoppers and retailers, with spending—and theft—on the rise. In 2022, American households averaged $3,800 in retail spending during December, contributing to a nationwide holiday retail tab of $531.8 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Alongside this surge, Indiana retailers reported $1.512 billion in theft losses, underscoring the ongoing challenges businesses face.
IMPD’s Holiday Helpers Initiative
To combat retail crime and protect shoppers, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has launched its Holiday Helpers program. Through Dec. 29, the department will bolster uniformed patrols at key shopping hubs, including:
- North Keystone Avenue
- 82nd and 86th Street corridors
“Our goal is to reduce crime and to make arrests if those things happen,” said IMPD Captain Shane Foley. Patrols are active inside and outside stores to deter theft and assure shoppers of their safety.
Simon Security Hub’s High-Tech Vigilance
Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, a leader in shopping mall management, is utilizing its advanced security hub to enhance safety. At the hub, analysts monitor data and video feeds from nearly 200 shopping centers nationwide. Using artificial intelligence and other technologies, they coordinate security responses in real-time.
“They’re taking in phone calls, dispatching officers, and analyzing surveillance,” said Simon’s Chief Security Officer Russ Tuttle.
National Efforts Against Organized Retail Crime
Law enforcement successes extend beyond Indiana. In Queens, NY, District Attorney Melinda Katz recently announced the dismantling of a multi-state theft ring responsible for stealing $2 million in products from major retailers like Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Macy’s, and Victoria’s Secret. The group resold stolen goods both domestically and internationally, including through a brick-and-mortar store in the Dominican Republic.
Tips for Shoppers
While retailers and law enforcement work to prevent theft, consumers are also urged to take precautions:
- Conceal Valuables: Store purses, packages, and backpacks in your car’s trunk rather than leaving them visible.
- Stay Aware: Be vigilant in crowded areas and report suspicious activity to store security or police.
- Secure Your Purchases: Avoid leaving unattended items in shopping carts or at counters.
With heightened patrols and advanced technology, Indianapolis aims to ensure a safer shopping season for everyone.
